Jhola out of Oscar race

Jhola, Nepal’s contender for this year’s foreign-language category of Academy Awards has been excluded from its latest Best 9 List. Critically acclaimed and box office hit Jhola is directed by Yadav Kumar Bhattrai and is based on a book written by Krishna Dharabashi. There is not a single Asian movie included in the list. The only Nepali movie to be nominated in the Best Foreign Film category was Eric Valli directed Caravan at the 72nd Academy Awards in 1999.

The movie Jhola is based on Sati Practice - recently widowed woman immolating herself on her husband’s funeral pyre - a Hindu culture prevalent in Nepal until 1920s. Actress Garima Panta won the Best Actress Award in SAARC Film Festival ’14 held in Sri Lanka for her acclaimed role in the movie. Sharing the silver screen with her are Deshbhakta Khanal, Sujal Nepal and Laxmi Giri

Awards Ceremony is scheduled on Falgun 10 (February 22, 2015) in Los Angeles, USA. Shortlisted Foreign-Language Films are listed herewith.
